Our history

 

The "Pensabene Agroconserve" is a company specialized in the production of typical Sicilian preserves.

Our family began this activity in 1869, creating in Palermo the first food industry in southern Italy, therefore we are the 5th generation that pursues the tradition and the quality and genuineness of its products.

Almost 150 years ago began the activity to transform and conserve fish and vegetables in oil, but it was in the twenties of the twentieth century that the plant was born, now in disuse, with the old chimney still visible today near Piazza Indipendenza in front Villa d'Orleans.

Under the large building of more than five hundred square meters were, among other things, three large pans capable of holding three hundred liters of oil, surmounted by a giant hood and chimney. Inside it produced tomato, tuna and sardines in oil, peeled and caponate.

But it was with Andrea Pensabene that the factory made a quantum leap. The grandfather fighter, gave the family company a strong impulse to grow, first with the move in Calabria of the red line, where the tomato was processed, and then with the growth of exports.

Thanks to the entrepreneurial talent of grandfather Andrea caponate and tomato extract, very difficult to produce at industrial level in the forties, they arrived in the United States, in Africa, in the Middle East, with the registered trademark "Marca Cuoco", characterized by a peeled tomato with chef's hat.

Today, we remember that period as a golden age, with black and white photos of the dynasty hanging on the wall and a document in which Commendatore Andrea Pensabene is recognized as participating in the ninth imperial exhibition in Tripoli, then an Italian colony.
